The well that moved the market
When a borehole arrived in Lodwar's outer quarter, the vegetable traders moved with it. Amina Akiru explains what changed and what got harder.
Twenty-six community well systems drilled, handed to the district, and tracked for a year.
This program was built to end. Wells were drilled and equipped between 2022 and 2024, and every system was transferred to the district water authority with trained operators, spare-part inventories and a published service standard.
We kept tracking uptime for a full year after handover because a handover that fails quietly is worse than no handover at all. The results below are the final audit, published so other funders can copy the model or the mistakes.
Latest reported values against this year's targets. A value below target stays visible — it is never rounded up or hidden.
| Indicator | Value | Target | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| People served at handover | 27,500 | 27,000 | |
| Systems handed to public operator | 26 | 26 | |
| Uptime in first year after handover | 97% | 90% |
This program is completed — its final year budget was folded into the annual report and no open budget remains.
The split above is the approved 2025 budget. Restricted gifts to this program are spent within it, and variances above five percent are explained in the quarterly spending note.
